Save the Tree

Introducing the Lesson Plan

This document provides a detailed lesson plan titled “Save the Tree!” designed for primary education within the Animal, Land, and Environment sector, specifically horticulture. It introduces characters, story elements, and interactive activities to engage children in environmental care and awareness.

  • Lesson introduction and characters: The story features Voss, a violet-coloured gardener bird responsible for caring for the Fledge Town tree, supported by other coloured Lina birds like Yell, Gwana, Dilly, and Navi.
  • Story and discussion prompts: The lesson uses a PowerPoint to introduce the story and characters, encouraging children to discuss why caring for the environment is important and to share their experiences.
  • Story sequence and recall activities: Slides guide children to recall the order of story elements such as leaves, storm, and characters, enhancing memory and engagement with the narrative.
  • Character engagement and self-assessment: Children learn about Voss’s role, tools, and skills, then self-assess how much they relate to Voss using a scale and dot system that tracks their engagement across lessons.
  • Skipper headband craft instructions: Instruction explain how one A4 card can make three headbands by folding, cutting into strips, and decorating; pipe cleaners are twisted into coils for antennae and attached to the headband.
  • Interactive games: The Skipper Tig Tag game involves children playing roles as Lina birds and Skipper insects, promoting physical activity and role-play related to the story.
  • Fledge Town Swap Shop resource: A card game with Voss-themed cards supports lesson activities, where children colour cards to match character colours and engage creatively.
  • Reflection and question activities: The lesson concludes with story recall, environmental discussions, a colouring page, and an ‘Ask Me Question’ activity to encourage reflection and verbal expression among pupils.
