Quiet Yell

Introducing the Lesson Plan

This lesson plan introduces children to the story “Quiet Yell,” centred around characters called Lina birds, who start as white “Fumfies” and change colour based on their roles in Fledge Town. The plan includes interactive activities and resources to engage pupils in understanding the characters and story elements.

  • Character introduction: The main character, Yell, is a yellow Lina bird entertainer who starts as a white Fumfy and chooses a role in Fledge Town. Supporting characters represent various roles and colours.
  • Colour and naming system: Young Lina birds begin white and change colour to match their role, adopting names starting with the same letter as their colour (e.g. Yell for yellow).
  • Yell’s skills and tools: Yell uses a microphone and has skills including singing, dancing, mimicking sounds, and entertaining through various performance arts.
  • Mimicking activity: The story highlights Yell’s special skill of mimicking sounds from creatures, encouraging children to try imitating animals like dogs, hens, and frogs.
  • Story sequencing task: Children listen to the story and later order images of key story elements such as Fumfy, heart, strawberry, small dog, dancing shoes, and log.
  • Puppet storytelling: Two puppet options (finger and lollypop stick puppets) allow children to retell the story in groups, fostering engagement and performance skills.
  • Worksheets and reflection: Activities include a worksheet where children identify Yell’s colour, role, tools, and skills, followed by a self-assessment exercise on how much they relate to Yell e.g. how much did they enjoy performing with the puppets.
  • Dot scale recording: A dot scale system helps children rate how much they are like Yell and other characters across other Fledge Town lessons, with dots later transformed into feathers for an individual creative activity.
  • Additional creative activities: The plan includes the option to make a Fledge Town Tree display with leaves, colouring story cards, and a question-and-answer game to support story recall and encourage pupil reflection.
